"Tree" from Malavika Mandal
Malavika
spent the formative years of her art career in Santiniketan. The rural
atmosphere whre she grew up as an artist was loaded with natural fragrances
and songs of birds, with youthful freshness and joy. Being a trained
textile designer she feels specially inclined to tapestry. She feels
tapestry offers the plus point of texture not possible on canvas. She
explores this tangible quality of textural aspect of tapestry by using
yarns of different materials such as cotton, jute hemp and wool. By
inserting extra weft yarn, or by using different weaves, by either leaving
or gathering he warp thread she creates a rhythm in the work giving
it a new dimension. Her depiction of the Tree Trunk is the emphatic
example of her love for the art and her artistic control on the medium.
